Dr. Dustin’s Shoulder Series: I’ve seen a lot with people having tremendous difficulty raising an arm overhead. Sometimes it’s painful, sometimes it’s not. Even had a lady recently that reached out to me that had an ACDF (cervical fusion for the non medical people out there). All because they thought the neck was what was causing her shoulder not to be able to go over her head. It was not the cause. And she still has the problem. So I decided to make a video series for people with difficulty with raising their arm overhead. Much of the time what I’ve seen is this is as much if not more a neuromuscular (muscle firing) problem as it is a mobility problem. Here’s the first exercise of the series. Scapular Protraction with Lift Off Start with your arm on a barbell, shelf, person (if they don’t mind you using them) elbow STRAIGHT. Have to emphasize elbow straight otherwise you’re not doing the exercise right and you’re substituting for the wrong muscle groups. Punch the shoulder blade forward and pause. Then lift off the shelf, barbell, shoulder, whatever and hold for 5-6 seconds. 2-3 sets of 10, 2-3 times per day -Dr. D For more videos on Pain with Reaching Overhead like this one Click HERE to see more content!
